Speeding fines in the UK are expensive and the penalty points have many consequences. Receiving a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) can be a nasty surprise. Speed Angel won't make those decisions for you — but it will help you stay aware of your speed and the limit.

About the App

Your UK speed limit guardian

Speed Angel is a GPS-based speed-limit awareness companion for Android. Using your phone's GPS, it continuously checks your current speed against the legal limit for the road you're on.

When you exceed the limit, the display turns red and a distinctive audio warning plays and is configurable to your needs — so you always know without looking at the screen.

The app works independently, and will also work alongside your navigation app, using audio ducking so the warning tone cuts through, then navigation audio returns — just like a Google Maps turn instruction.

Covers UK roads of all classes: motorways, A-roads, B-roads, residential and urban streets. No setup required — limits are detected automatically from your GPS position and heading.

Speed Angel can't guarantee anything — only you control the car. But most speeding fines happen when drivers simply lose track of their speed and/or the speed limit. Speed Angel alerts you the moment you exceed its displayed limit, so accidental creep and missing that sudden 30mph sign is much less likely. Many drivers find it reduces the stress of worrying about speed cameras too. If you are not speeding, cameras are just furniture.
Speed Angel will be free to download and trial. Optional paid features may be added later. Beta access is free while we test and improve the app. Contact us to apply to be a tester.
Coverage is very good on most UK roads. Some minor rural roads may have incomplete speed limit data. Coverage improves continuously as the database is updated. Temporary speed limits, road works and variable limits are not covered. Speed Angel is a driving awareness aid and it is your legal responsibility to observe and comply with the posted speed limit.
On Android, go to Settings → Security → Install Unknown Apps and enable installation from your browser or file manager. Then open the downloaded APK file and follow the prompts.

No. Speed Angel uses Android's audio ducking system — the same mechanism used by Google Maps. The warning tone briefly lowers navigation audio, plays, then navigation audio returns.
Press the "Report wrong limit" button in the app. This triggers an immediate re-check from the database and updates memory.
No — and that's deliberate. The aim of Speed Angel is to help you stay safe and legal within the limit, not just slow down for cameras. If you're not speeding, you don't need to be concerned about where cameras are. Besides, if you rely on camera alerts, it's the pop-up temporary mobile camera that isn't on any list that will get you.
