Find Live Petrol & Diesel Prices Near You in the UK

UK fuel prices vary by several pence per litre between stations just miles apart. Knowing where the cheapest petrol or diesel is near you can easily save £3–£5 per fill-up. Here is exactly how to find live, accurate prices — and how to have them automatically on the map whenever you drive.

Where does UK fuel price data come from?

Since April 2024, UK fuel retailers are legally required to report their petrol and diesel prices daily to the UK Government's Fuel Finder database — managed by DESNZ (the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero). This was introduced under the Motor Fuel (Retail Price Display) Regulations 2024.

The result is the most comprehensive and reliable source of UK fuel price data ever available — covering over 7,500 filling stations across Great Britain. Every major forecourt and most independent stations are included.

Speed Angel connects to this official Government API to power both our live fuel price map and the in-app fuel layer.

How much does petrol cost in the UK?

Average UK petrol (E10 unleaded) prices fluctuate with global oil markets, but as a general guide:

Retailer typeTypical price (early 2026)
Supermarket forecourts (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons)Usually 3–8p below area average
Branded independents (Shell, BP, Esso, Texaco)Around area average
Motorway servicesOften 10–20p above area average
Rural independentsVariable — can be high or surprisingly low

The difference between the cheapest and most expensive station in a typical town is often 8–15 pence per litre. On a 50-litre fill-up, that is £4–£7.50.

💡 Quick answer: To find the cheapest petrol near you right now, use our free live fuel price map — enter any UK town or city and see nearby stations colour-coded cheapest (green) to dearest (red).

How to find the cheapest fuel near you

Option 1: Use the Speed Angel website fuel map

Our live fuel prices page lets anyone search for petrol or diesel prices near any UK town or city — no account or app needed:

  1. Go to speed-angel.com/fuel-prices.html
  2. Enter your town or city name
  3. Select petrol or diesel
  4. See all nearby stations on a live map — green markers are cheapest, red are dearest
  5. Tap any marker to see the exact price per litre

Prices come directly from the Government Fuel Finder database and are refreshed every 12 hours.

Option 2: Use the Speed Angel app while driving

The Speed Angel Android app shows live fuel prices as a map layer while you drive. As you approach a town or area, fuel station icons appear on the map automatically — colour-coded just like the website. Tap a station to see the current price.

Because it updates based on your GPS position, you see prices for wherever you happen to be — useful when you are away from home or on a long journey and want to know whether to fill up now or wait for the next town.

The app also provides real-time speed limit alerts — a separate feature that tells you the legal limit for the road you are on, the moment you exceed it. Both features work together in one app, free to download with a 14-day trial.

Petrol vs diesel — which fuel type should I search?

The price difference between petrol and diesel varies, but diesel is typically 2–5 pence per litre more expensive than petrol at the same station. Both fuel types are covered by the Government reporting requirement and included in the Speed Angel database.

E5 (premium unleaded) is not covered by the Government reporting requirement and is therefore not included in our database.

How often are fuel prices updated?

Our database pulls fresh data from the Government Fuel Finder API every 12 hours. Retailers are required by law to report price changes within 24 hours of a change taking effect. In practice, major supermarket chains update their prices in the database within a few hours; some independent stations may take up to 24 hours.

This means the prices you see are accurate for the vast majority of stations, and at worst a few hours behind for very recent changes. The colour-coded comparison (green / amber / red) is relative to the area average — stations are compared to others nearby, not to a national benchmark.
